Hi!

Insane Reefer

New member
Hi All,
I'm in Columbia, and am hoping to have the stuff to start setup on a 29gal reef w/fish in July or August. I haven't had a reef in a few years, and am really excited. I am also out of the loop as it were. I'm looking to "meet" local(ish) folks who might be willing to share, trade and sell tank goodies. At first I would be looking for healthy DSB starts, and a few small rocks or rubble, or to go in on a LR order. Later would be looking for critters and corals and stuff.

I have a lot of my equipment already, but my next step while I save up money for lights and stand is to make my live rock. I have made several batches of the stuff in the past and have gotten pretty good at it. I have a couple of idea's I want to try before I make my rock for this tank, and since this will be a small batch, and experimental, I wanted to see if anyone would be intersted in coming and doing sort of a workshop with me. If anyone is interested, we can talk about details then.
We would make rocks you could each take home, based on the "Traditional" recipes. It'll be fun

Do you actually have to live in St Louis to join SEASL? And do you actually have to put in appearences? I'm really shy and get tongue-tied and flustered around people...

Anyway, just wanted to say "Hi!" and let you all know there is a new kid on the block.

Thanks!

No, you don't have to live in St. Louis and you don't have to attend meetings, but you might want to put in an appearance b/c the meetings are COOL! :)

We just wrapped up our annual Frag Fest last Saturday. We "officially" take the summers off, but we'll probably have some informal events planned for June/July/Aug.

Eric Borneman (author of Aquarium Corals: Selection, Husbandry, and Natural History) will be visiting us this fall, and we'll have a variety of other themed meetings throughout the year.

You can learn more about us at www.seasl.org.

I might be interested in rock making. We had a demonstration on it about a year and a half ago. I've been wanting to give it a shot. Let me know!

Thanks for the welcome :)

Let me see why this first test batch isn't setting up yet (time, possibly), and then we can talk, lol. I got anxious and went ahead and have started the test rocks with some different aggregate ideas.

Actually, those who want to come, will probably be coming the first day of of my main cast for the rocks for my new tank. I'll be casting with white type 3 cement and southdown, with primary aggregate of crushed beach rubble and crushed oyster shell, mixed. Those who attend will be asked to bring stuff like crushed coral/shell, and appropriate sand (or you can chip in on a bag of mine). Grey portland will be available for free, or bring a bag of white type 3. Also bring a box of a size that it will fit in your tank - this makes sure the rock you cast isn't too big (Doh!)

Quartz sand and oyster shell will be the mold medium - most will brush off; this is the accepted molding procedure.

I've never really hosted something like this before, but can't think it would be that difficult to arrange. But I am sure we can all learn from each other and have fun - as well as cast "that rock" you've always dreamed of finding ;)

Thanks again!

Hmmmmmm, shy around others yet seemingly willing to invite people over for a gathering. Now if my wife could only take lessons for you I'd be able to have friends over to my house!

Hi!

Yeah, I am much more comfortable in my own habitate :o
Plus trying to make meetings in a one car family could be difficult - that's a long haul, lol.

:D
