High Cal & Mag

Anyone have any experience runninh high cal & mag?

I screwed up my dosing and got mine up to 490 cal and 1520 Mag. It could be unrelated but my SPS growth seems to have increased during this same time.

I've also had issues with Zoa melt and other softies not wanting to open.

Maybe it's all unrelated.

My mag stays around 1560. No I'll effects on coral or fish. Can't speak to calcium being that high though.

I tried lowering it but can't seem to keep it down. I don't dose mag anymore and that's where it lives now lol. No sense in trying to change if it works. I've seen the best growth out of my tank right now so I'm skeptical to change anything.

Alk has way more affect on corals.
The calcium to me doesn't seem off the spectrum. I wouldn't ever worry if my cal was that high. Wouldn't even consider posting about it other than why it was that high. If you know why then your all good.

remember dont chase numbers and make yourself go crazy. We have enough to worry about :)

PS: Dont change too fast on Mag as mollusks are affected by it. Also shrimp.

Actually I wasn't really worried. The SPS growth out wieghs any unfavorable conditions for the softies for me. I was actually wondering if anyone else had noticed increased growth of acros at those slightly elevated levels.

I know this sounds silly but chasing numbers and excessive testing is kind of enjoyable to me. I'm a little OCD and chasing numbers kind of gives me a focus for my craziness.

Thanks for the input.

I never noticed increased growth with elevated mag/cal levels. I'd definitely keep them higher if it worked, but it never made a difference in my experience.

Thanks Nook might just be the maturity of the tank. This tank I've had running about 15 months now.

My experience is once a tank gets in that mature range like you're at, things can just take off. Mine was having issues up until the 1.5 year mark and then just took off. They seem to stagnate at times with no growth too, not sure what the limiting factors are.

Kind of crazy how that happens. Seemed like on my 1 year anniversary my tank just exploded with growth.

How old is your test kit? I had the same experience of getting the same numbers every time I tested and it turned out my kit was bad. I ended up with mag over 2000 causing problems because I thought it was low each time and kept dosing.

So as you guys said my params had nothing to do with my issues with Zoa's and other softies. I just caught my big fat *** yellow blotched rabbit fish making a snack of them. I guess I'll increase his daily Nori.
