IME - high alk and calcium usually help to combat nusiance algae - I'd do what you can to vaccuum out all the extra food that is hidden behind rocks and in the sandbed from the over-feedings - that type of nutrient build up is very easy to do, but very hard to solve once the damage is done (aka, tearing down, removing nutrient-rich sand, rinsing out porus live rock, and making sure to use 0-TDS RO/DI water for a 100% waterchange ) granted, lesser steps will combat the problem at a slower pace - this is just what I have done in the past to stop the problem dead in it's tracks.
I understand what you're trying to do by adding the super-force clean-up crew - but they can only break down the extra food into waste products instead of it just rotting away - in either case - the phosphates and nitrates finally derived from a piece of shrimp will *basically* break down into the same amount of nitrate and phosphate, reguardless of which animals it's eaten by (or if "processed" through many animals, you loose a bit to energy production - but still end up with extra nutrients) -- sorry if that's a bit too detailed (when bomber's reading threads in your reef-club, I want to make sure I cover my bases ), but just trying to show the general point: food in --> waste out, hence why you don't see many puffers/lionfish/groupers in reef tanks
(sorry if I skimmed too much of the thread) - what kind of sandbed - depth and size of sand - do you have?
