High Flow Filter Media For Wet/Dry

I just recently set up an Eshoppes 300 wet/dry that is rated for 1200 GPH but I modified it by enlarging the drains to 1.5" and drilling out more holes in the drip tray. I was hoping that I would be able to get 1600 GPH through this thing. When I have it running at this flow rate, I notice that the drip trays are overflowing a bit and flooding the top. After closer inspection and playing with it, it is the filter floss that came with it that is causing the drip tray to overflow. I took the filter floss out and it was draining well with no flooding.

So, is there such thing as a high flow filter media I can use so that the water flows through better but still does an effective job at catching all the crap?

How big of a tank do you have this on that you need 1600gph going through your drain? You only want around 3-8x turnover from your drain, the rest of your flow comes from powerheads or a closed loop

It's 4 40's plumbed together to make 160 gallons. I think it's the filter floss that came with the filter that is causing it as it is thin but very densely packed. It reminds me of a thick felt sheet.

I had the same issue. Seemed to overflow where the media filter and drilled holes were backing it up

I changed media filter to something that resembles a air filter for air vent registers. And works great! Only issue i have is that it gets dirty quickly so i replace it once a week. I dont wash them i just toss them. Its getting costly...
Is there a way to clean the brown green gunk off the filter.

You only need 800-1000gph total between all those tanks. About 250gph per tank. Just slow the flow down so that the water filters properly.
