high nitrates better for clams?

when i had my clam (derasa) in my nano it was open w/ a full mantle all the time. most of the time my nitrates were around 60! lost a few things but the clam loved it... i upgraded to a 30 gal w/ 20 gal fuge. i have a 6 inch dsb in the display and fuge. i switched everything over 6 mos ago. now my dsb is working well and my nitrates are around 10. i actually have more watts on it now, but it doesn't seem as happy- it's still open but not as much. same fish that was in the nano, so no one is picking at it. is the water too "clean" now? just a thought...

don't have any good pics.. but here's my list: a pair of clowns, scooter blenny and yellow tang. inverts: cleaner shrimp, snails (niserias-sp?, turbos), zebra hermits. right now i don't dose w/ anything except purple up and suppliments (iodine, etc) once a week if i remember. my calcium has been 800! so i didn't want to start adding kalk. alk is good, ph stays on the low end around 7.8-8.0 though. nitrates will stay around 5 if i don't over feed, 10 at the highest. is 5 too low?

Are you sure your calcium is 800? That seems like a testing error. 5 for nitrates is fine for your Derasa as long as you don't have algae blooms. How big is your clam? Clams under 3 inches generally need supplemental phytoplankton as they can't make enough food with just light alone.
