High PH

Hi All,

I tested my tank last night and the PH with an API kit was still reading high (8.8). I was wondering what others have used to attempt to lower the PH back to acceptable range. I do not have an electronic PH meter yet so the API is all I have to go by.

I have tried aerating the water more but that has had no effect. I know the buffers are not a good solution. I have not tried the vinegar option as discussed in the reefkeeping article below:

http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-03/rhf/index.php

I am not able to test for alkalinity yet since the test kit is still in the mail from Dr F&S.

Any recommendations will be apprecated!

Thanks!
Curtis

if the test kit is all you have to go by, I'd say ignore it. Unless you're seeing problems with the corals/fish in the tank, at which point I'd recommend getting a good probe setup. A test kit is not going to give reliable results, and you're risking a lot to adjust something based on its data. get a battery of good test kits for alk, calc, mag, etc., before trying to manage pH (which is usually not the best solution).

its unlikely 8.8 is accurate, very unlikely, probably a duff ph kit, readings that high are usually faulty kits or user error

I kinda thought the test kit may be bad. I'll look into a PH probe. Thanks for the help!
