The clip-on fans are conveinient, and are better than nothing, but simply do not move much air. Best is to buy a turbo-type fan (largest that will fit) and lay it directly on top of the sump blowing downward onto the water surface. It's the evaporative-cooling effect that makes this work, so the more air volume movement the better.
Best option is to have two fans working in concert....one automated to come on at 80 degrees and a second/backup fan (perhaps even larger) coming on at 82 degrees. Then, If you have a chiller, have it come on at 84 degrees.
80 --> fan #1
82 --> fan #2
84 --> chiller

Is there a cheap, water temp-controlled switch available? I'm not willing to pay for marine tank specific controllers, wanted to know if anyone found something outside the hobby to control my sump on the cheap.

You can buy a Ranco for about $60. That's as cheap as I've seen them.

Here is a pic of my sump fan I just installed. It's a Honeywell, pretty strong, cost about $16 and has a wall mount hole on the bottom so it worked out perfect for my sump.

I installed it when I saw my temps creep past 83 last week. I have it set to turn on at 80 and it seems that my temps have not made it past 81 since. It's using more top off now, but everything is still hundreds less than a chiller and filling my top off resovoir every week or two instead of 3 weeks is not a big deal to me.

i would recommend reefkeeper 2. it monitors and can control temp while also giving you timers for lights and everything else. it's worth the $270

It's amazing what a couple of computer fans across the water surface can do. Don't worry about noise too much (to a degree, of course): get the ones with the highest cfm (cubic feet per minute) that will fit.

Brought my temp down 5 degrees on the hot days. On regular days, I generally run only one of the two.

well, i put a fan in yesterday. in the morning i saw a temperature of 79! That's amazing. When I got home at 6:30pm, i saw the temp of 82! That's livable. So, it does work.
