Its more to do with organics in your water. If you are having algae problems, look at your Phosphate and Nitrate levels.

ooh no its not that i was just wondering if there was a limit cause im setting up a 5.5 gallon reef tank and im going to get the 20 watt coralife compacts bulbs and run 2 of them making 40 watts which is about 8 watts a gallon i was just wondering if that was to much or not enough.

That would be fine, its not too much. What kind of corals are you looking to keep?

Some people put a 250w metal halide bulb over 10 gallon tanks so you will be ok.

i want to keep shrooms zoos maby bubble corals pylops and stuff like that the lights should be alright for that right?

250W a gallon, thats fish stew with out a hectic skimmer.

What on earth does a 250W bulb on a 10G have to do with a skimmer? Did you mean chiller? Fish stew? Heat maybe? Do fish crap more when it's bright outside?
