Hippo Tang Experiences

Wasn't trying to use it in a derogatory way. Just was referring to those that constantly yell at others on forums about tangs. Sorry of I offended anyone.
Maybe some would rather any large fish regardless of type be housed in a large tank. So, its not just tangs but they are of the more popular fish for those new to the hobby. Mainly because they are told they are great at eating their pest algae, they look great, and Dori.

If Large angels were as popular I'm sure the same label would be applied.

Very true. My dream fish is actually a queen angel. Hopefully one day when I have more funds :(

Let's keep it friendly, everyone.

Dustin, we try to keep the discussion on a level that doesn't include labeling people a certain way. Everyone has opinions, and there are extremists on both sides of about any argument.

As I stated above, we all have our opinions. Generally they are formed with experience and observation. Decisions can be endlessly debated, but, like politics, it isn't often that the more rigid opinions are changed. We can only hope that decisions in stocking levels are based on the optimum environment we can provide. The fact that optimum doesn't equal perfect (the "swimming pool" argument) doesn't mean it isn't to be strived for.

Well said, wasnt trying to start an argument guys! Was just saying I believe 120 is big enough for a regal. Maybe I'm wrong.

Happy reefing!

Yep and that's cool. Some have had them in smaller tanks for years. Probably one of the most successful and longest running tanks on at least this site if not most everywhere had a blue hippo tang in a 100g. You'd have to ask him how long it lived but I believe he'll laugh if you ask if it was happy or not. I agree with him on that point as we have no idea how to tell if a fish is happy or not or if they feel such things or not.

Like BrianD said above, we can only go by our beliefs based on our experiences of observations. Fish do not have the same biology as us though and should be able to grow to at least near max size if not bigger given the right circumstances. I would also propose in the wild certain fish may actually grow smaller then a fish in captivity in the right environment as the captive fish wouldn't have to worry about predators and can just eat and mate all day.

What bothers me is when some one throws in my face you're just a part of the xyz police so your opinion doesn't matter and you shouldn't be listened to because of their one special case of having a certain fish alive for a short amount of time.

Blue Tang in 120- NO
Blue Tang Hardiness- Depends on individual, IME from working in aquarium store, the smaller the more vulnerable the larger the hardier
QT- Yes, definitely. If I could turn back time I would. I made the mistake of dropping a blue tang w/o QT, it broke out killed 5 other fish, the BT itself survived and got really chubby and now living happily with a Desjardini, yellow tang, foxface among others, no aggression issue at all.

OK, no blue tang in a 120, i your opinion, not mine...i hope you don't have that Desjardini in a 180 because that's to small in Reef Central opinion; here is their opinion: "Zebrasoma desjardinii Indian Ocean or Red Sea Sailfin Tang, 240 gallon 8 feet".....

ok I think we are supposed to try and help CSalty out, so here goes mine, had BT's in the past, 55 gallon tank (pre-internet days) at 4" or so I think it was already to small of a tank for that fish
-fast forward 15 years, now got a BT and put in my DT, everything great for about 18 months, got along with others, grew great, very heathly and beautiful fish, then dummy me I got more fish and due to size/timing/huge dumbness I skipped QT and added them, BT got ich in about a week, due to anemones and corals couldn't treat and couldn't ever seem to catch him and net him out..... die/I killed the fish with my dumb action
-replaced it with another BT, but (still dummy me) it got ich of course also as now I have ich in my tank... no more killing fish on my watch over somthing this dumb
-I have taken all the fish out of my tank after a year of trying Prozi and other items and still having ich, so they are all in my QT and running copper and see zero signs of ich now
-I have a 50 gal breader for QT with 6" BT, 7" Naso, 6" Imperator Angel, 2 OC clowns and 2 Dotty backs, all getting along great but I feed heavy, do weekly water changes and watch them multiple times a day, tank is too small for most of them let alone grouped togeather but I have a plan......
...I am setting up a new 330 gallon (11'6" long) and once that is up and cycled the BT and others will go in there, leaving the 120 fallow for 8-10 weeks as per mentioned previously ich will travel on rock and coral so leaving it to die out
-I don't know what would happen once/if the BT got to 7" or 8" in the 120 though, and I think he would get there, real piggy and has grown about 1.5"=-2" in a year since I got him
-not to fan any flames (I also think it is so hard to read emotion on emails so of course some times things seem as they really aren't or at least read worse than the really are) but I don't mind the "police" work of others and don't feel insulted by others comments on the net to me, the vast majority I think really care and are only trying to help and protect our fish, they have saved me from other dumb mistakes I almost made
-that is my experience, hope it lets you make a good decision

I've had mine for about 5 months. She's been good so far. Eats anything doesn't bother anyone. She's kind of a wimp; definitely defers to my purple tang. She loves nori and no signs of ich but I haven't had her that long.

I'd say if you want one, give it a try. They are a hardy fish and really are beautiful.
