Hippo tang quality

Juice It

After my power outage and losing everything a few weeks back I took my son and hit five stores over the weekend and picked up some good stuff. Of coarse with little kids the "Dori" was on the list of must haves. All 5 stores had at least 2 and I did not find a single one that wouldn't have been a risk to buy. Out of all the fish I see everywhere these and yellow tangs must have a survival rate of about 1 in 10. A fat healthy hippo or yellow tang is a rare sight in my area.

I dont know wherein maryland you are, but if you're anywhere near Dr. Mac (Pacific East Aquaculture), see if Dr. Mac can get you one. He hand picks all his fish.
I'm a little partial though.... (my Hippo is from Dr. Mac... he's fat as a house and going strong).

I am closer to you in Potomac. I thought Dr.Macs was just coral. Any good stores in northern va. you can recommend?

Thanks!

Great to see you are patience and wise person when it comes to selecting fish. I see people around here buying fish that looks like they are on their last leg. Powderblue tangs that look like skeletons, people buy them because of their colors. I watch a Yellow tang that look like a skeleton with ich get sold and it was at the Lfs for a month and a half and someone came in and took it. I wanted a yellow tang but a fat one and healthy.

If you can't find them locally, I'd suggest LADD. You can get primo stuff to your door and they don't leave there unless they're in good shape.
