Are hippo tang reef safe, I here they may nip at some corals
Is there just certain corals they will nip at????

The only thing I found hippo tangs liked was zoanthids.
Not all will do it, but for the ones that do, once they realize zoanthids are a food source, they will consume whole colonies.

Yes, they are eating the photosynthetic zooxanthellae algae.

I think my hippo nips at my green birdsnest. He's nowhere near any spot that would have algae for him to eat, before someone mentions that.

A few years ago I had a pair of hippo tangs that loved to snack on a single type of green sinularia. Never bothered anything else and every hippo tang I've had since then has been completely fine with corals and clams. Worst thing I've seen is fin nipping.

+1. My HT plowed through my colonies of devil's Armor, Candy Apple Reds and Fruit Loops. He leaves the larger Palys alone though. I've started feeding the tank more and will keep an eye on him when I introduce more Zoas into the tank.

Had one for years that was ok then he started nipping at my sps so I replaced him with a smaller one, now that he has gotten bigger hes eating my sps . As of yet havent been able to catch him in my 700 gal reef. He has completly destroyed a couple of nice colonies and damaged a dozen more. Never again will I put a hippo tang in my reef. there worst than angels

hhhmmmm, now see I have heard that from a couple of other people.
which again still leaves me skeptical to introduce a hippo tang
of course quite easy to catch fish in my 150 with a trap,,
thanks for your reply folks, I appreciate your input,,
