Hippo Tangs

I'm interested in getting a hippo tang.... Anyone have an idea of their temperment, how big do they get and can they be put with other tangs? Are they pretty hardy fish?

I've heard they can be mean, but I got one at saltycritter, when he was small, about the size of quarter, and he's fine in my tank with a mandarin, two dottybacks, niger trigger, yellow tang, pink spot goby, flame angel, and the other assorted critters. Occasionally, he'll pick up a snail or hermit and then just drop them. I think he copied this off of the trigger. Size wise he about 2 inches now and seems to have stopped there, but I've seen them 5 inches long. My tank size is a 120. Anyway, take the info for what its worth...

Fosters & Smith has put together a website with all kinds of pet information. It is called www.PetEducation.com
They have a page on the fish you asked about HERE

You can usually find the fish you are looking into on that sight or if not you can try marinecenter.com .

Hope that helps,

Thank You

Thank You

Thanks for the info. It should be ok with my other tangs from what I read.... We're going to Aquatic tech the afternoon thanks for the heads up! I just may have to pick one up :)

Have a nice holiday weekend everyone!

I was told that same shaped tangs will have a greater tendency to fight. Not sure what you have and your experience may vary.

I have seen my blue morpho tang attack my false percula. It bit right in the center of clown fishes body and shook it like a rag doll. The tang was about 6" or better at the time. It did start to become aggressive as it got older though.

I guess I'm kindof glad we didn't get one... Aquatic tech didn't have any today... I'd hate to give it a try and have it bite into one of our other fish.... We did get some nice frogspawn at Tropical Aquarium and a blueberry gorgonian and frag of montipora at aquatic tech :)

Have had a hippo or morph tang in my tank for 2 yrs, has never bothered any of my other fish. In with a black, yellow, naso, chevron, purple, thompson, spotted naso, powder blue tang, along with queen, flagfin angel, several wrasses, gobies, mandarin and more.................they are ich magnets.

i have hippo in my tank and they are great fish but they are not the hardiest fish to get mine has devolope HLLE. I would get a bigger hippo +4in and you might have a better survivle rate

I have had great success in raising tangs when I was in FL and my hippo was one of the best. I took the advice of an experienced reefer and it never failed me. Tangs will naturally be agressive towards one another at first and they will single each other out. My advice to you and this is what I did and was successful, is to intoduce tangs in groups of 3 or larger. More distractions. Using this method I was able to get 7 different species of tangs to co-exist peacefully with each other. just my 2 cents

Thank you. I will try that method :) Do you think it's be better to wait until we get our 125 gallon tank going instead of putting them in a 72?

I've had a hippo for over four years. It does fine with a purple tang which was introduced at about the same time. They were both half dollar size. The hippo is about 6inches and the purple about five. They are in a 90gallon reef and share it with a pair of tomato clowns a three stripe damsel, a four inch yellow pyramid butterfly, and a red scooter blenny with no problems. Any new additions will receive a harsh greeting fromthe zebramosa(purple tang) for one or two days.;the hippo ignores them.
I feed the a clip of dried seaweed along with spirulina flake, prime reef flake, minced krill and a mixture of brine, mysis, bloodworm and cyclopese with a litle garlic.. I feed this menu in the morming and feed the mixture again in the eveneing.

This hippo nipped trachypyllia, scolymia and cynarina to a point where these corals remained constantly closed necessitating removing them to another tank.
It is a beautiful and healthy fish. It has had a few minor bouts with crytocaryon over the years but has been able to shake it off without treatment. I uderstand they are generally thought to be somewhat delicate and ich prone so I consider myself fortunate with this one.

I have a 7 inch hippo tang in with a valigmi (sp?) and yellow tang. He's just a little aggressive at feeding time (doens't fight, but will steal food from other fish). He's just a bull in a china shop, knocking over smaller corals and frags. While other fish glide in and out among the rocks, he barrels thru.
Oh, at one time I saw what I thought was ich, (I have been told they are "ich magnets") and I picked up a couple of cleaner shrimp and never saw any spots again. That was about four or five months ago.
