Noticed this little guy on a beautiful Acro I picked up today. Is it an acrocrab? I've heard these are actually beneficial? Or is it a bad crab that will eat my beautiful new coral?
There are several threads about Acro crabs. Just remember this statement "all crabs are opportunistic feeders" This means that at anytime they will eat anything that presents itself. I don't trust crabs.
I bought an acro frag that came with a crab. I thought it was a beneficial crab but it turned out to be eating the coral. I watched it for a few days and I saw it finally eating the flesh. It would do this at night and the coral would retract it's polyps.
If you don't want to take a chance, know that the coral will do perfectly fine without a commensal crab.
If you want to take a chance then you can just watch it for a few days and see if it is eating the coral. Any flesh eaten will grow back in a few days after removal of the crab.
I apologize but I have already thrown him in my sump. I don't think you would have wanted him anyway. I saw two white areas right where he was sitting after 24 hours so I removed him. I have to agree with Giants13, unless I buy an acrocrab I will probably remove any hitch hiker crabs on my acros.
