I found a hitch hiker in my 110 gal tonight. This tank has been up and running with no added live rock for 18+ months. While feeding the tank tonight my girlfriend spotted the great white crab. A Xanthid (gorillia) crab about the size of a 50 cent piece...maby a bit bigger. Anyways hes been in the tank for quite some time now....I think it survived the cycle...i used the LR and some chromis and damsel to cycle the tank in february 2005. But any way, so my girl spots the crab and were watchin if for 10 or 15 minutes trying to see where its going. There is a rock in the front of my tank that began seeing some activity about 6 months ago...something began excivating a burro. The crab seemed to be heading for this cave but kept stopping and backing up then coming forward and so on and so forth. Then I noticed a blue legged hermit on its back infront of the cave and right as I looked at the hermit something came out of the cave. I know its a crustation....it seemed to be very shrimp like...perhaps even mantis shrimp like, but I didnt get that good of a look before it dashed back into its cave. Its was opaque almost clear with some sections of its body or shell fleshy color. I think I saw a claw but im not sure, it moved so fast. It came out for a split second a few more times and then I think it noticed me watching it because it never came back out while the hermit was trying to flip over. Jenny thinks she may have seen the antennules of a mantis, but again were not sure. Ive herd clicks...some times a few in rapid succession some times one here and another a few minutes later.
Do pistol shrimp kill hermit crabs? Ive never had a pistol shrimp nor have I done much research on them so I know very little of their diet, habitat or behaviour.
I cant figure out where it came from...the last live rock that was added was a very long time ago...within the first 8 months of its life. So the critter has been in there for almost 2 years and ive never even known. I wish I could give more detail but I cant...i want to take the tank down and condence it into a 75 or 90 gal SPS tank but I dont have the money for a tank and the other equipment ill need for it just yet. But when I do Im gunna do my best to catch it and see what the heck it is if I havent figured out by then.
