Hlle

Poor water quality, poor food quality and stress (caused by small environment or tankmates) are considered causes of it.

Also, many people attribute activated carbon to HLLE. Both times I've had accidents with carbon in my system that resulted in some carbon dust going into the tank I've had HLLE outbreaks in my tanks that took months to clear.

In my tank I have probably the top two fish for getting HLLE - an emperor and a hippo tang. I've had both for 2 years with no trace of the HLLE untill I accidently dropped a bag of carbon into the sump and it got pulled into the pump intake. I didn't realize what happened for a few days and now the emperor has the HLLE pretty bad. Strangely the hippo looks good.

Recty, what did you do to get your fish cleared up?

I removed the carbon from the water after I was done removing the cupramine and just continued to feed well (homemade mix of food supplemented with vitamins and lots of NLS pellets) and do regular water changes.

I've been using HOB activated carbon filters for years and have never experienced any problems with HLLE . However,I dont change the bags as often as directed but I like Activated carbon for water purification purposes. I guess everything in moderation as there does appear to be the possibility that it can cause the disease.
