so i went to feed the tank saturday afternoon and found the water level very close to overflowing. my overflow u tube had built up with algae. it soaked in vinegar for the afternoonand went back in clean as new this evening, but still a little close for my liking. at least the vortech kept the tank at 3000 gal/hour for the day.

I wrapped mine with electrical tape just above the water line and over the top of the U when I had lights in a canopy. Seemed to work well

The overflow of those things is pretty common. I had one and did an addaptor of a hose (airhose) in the top-middle of the utube-horseshoe, from there I ran the hose into a power head so it would remove any air bubble buildup. It might even autostart. You definitely need to cover it up with something so the bright lights won't shine on it and grow algae. I put the cleanup towel on top of mine... never stop checking that tube for algae and blockage...

The best solution is to my my 75 gallon bowfront system that has a built in overflow! The built in overflow is the only way to go...

first time i have used halides and they are up high enough to grow algae in the u tube. this system is tossed together till we have a bigger place and thus more aquarium room.
