HOB overflow question.

you may want to look into the cpr hangon overflow boxes with an aqualifter pump. this unit gets rid of the u tube. it has a great track record of being dependable as well. this may be a lil more upfront but will avoid some headaches down the road. they are pretty reasonable at marine depot.

What if the pump fails or gets clogged (easy to clog AL pump with such small lines). Yikes!!

the aqua lifter pump works to get the extra air out as it pull water out. the aqua lifter pump is not needed but recommended from the manufacture for simplicty.

Junk the overflow boxes and drill the tank... Trust me... the siphon will break. I had one for 3 yrs and it always flooded the house and emptied my sump....

Yeah i would love to drill this tank but the bottom is temperd. Until i get a bigger house with room for a bigger drilled tank iam going to make use of what i have. I have heard alot of stories of how much better it is to have a drilled tank (= No worries). But iam sure there is a lot of heads out there that are still using external overflows without any problems. If these units were not working for them this and many other forums would be full of HOB overflows forsale..... :lmao:

If you go that route... clean it weekly.... You would be surprised at the amount of junk that will clog the hose..
Including Amphipods......

Thanks Marcrothchild & Frank for the info. I think iam gonna go with a Lifereef overflow. just until i get a drilled tank later down the road. What size do you suggest for my 80 gal? The 700 GPH or the 1400GPH? Thanks again..........

the 700gph will do.....the 1400 will require twice as much maintenance as it has 2 skimmer boxes. Do yourself a favor and request a black surface skimmer, the clear ones show the algae growth on the inside of the box and need to be cleaned more often.....more a cosmetic issue than a functional one.

Thanks guys.Lots of usefull info here. Iam ready to wrap this up & buy my equipment this week. A friend of mines offerd me a Eshopps dual hob overflow model ES1000 rated for 1000 GPH. Like a said before i have 80 aga main tank and a large tank that i will be using as a sump/fuge (48x18x24) I think iam gonna baffle this tank as follows Inlet,Return,Fuge so my fuge wont be subjected to high water flow. I was thinking of getting a pump & teeing it off & run some of this flow back into the fuge iinstead of adding a single ball valve and putting back pressure on the pump Question: What size return pump should i get to run with this overflow? Brand? Thanks Again Reefers.........

I'm trying to collect such stories. Can you please specify what type of overflow box you had where the siphon broke, leading to "ALWAYS flooded the house." How many times and what length of time. Not seeking to be argumentative, just want to get as much specifics as I can. What lead to each of the many frequent, constant siphon breaks? What attempts did you make to resolve the problem?
