HOB overflow

Oh boy, now you done gone and did it.

You've stirred up the great debate.

Here's the deal. Everyone will tell you that LifeReef has the hands down best overflow built. I don't doubt it at all... I've never used one, but if everyone says it, it must be.

However, they cost an arm and a leg.

I have owned 2 - eshopps overflow boxes... and currently own one. I have never, I mean never had one fail. I don't see how it could possibly fail if you have the right amount of flow thru it.

If you run it correctly, it won't fail... and it's built very solid. And it costs 1/3 - 1/2 of a LifeReef.

I have and love eshopps. They have never given me a problem at all. I am currently runnig 3 of them in my house with no failures to date. I bought a spare thinking I might need it and never have. I your interested I would be willing to sell you my spare for a good price. It is brand new and never used. It is the pf1200 which states 1000gph but it can do more than 1000gph. Let me know if your interested. I also have 2 6' drain hoses for it.

what flow do i need?

What size is your sump?

I will suggest getting the lifereef. I have one, and it has been running for 5+ years without fail.

On my 29, I have an Eshopps -- had to modify it so that it wouldn't lose siphon when the main pump was off. In the outside box, the baffle isn't high enough. Others have had good luck with them, but I know that I personally wouldn't get one again.

DIY a PVC overflow!

DIY a PVC overflow!

I never worked with PVC in my life before this! It is very simple and works great! The only difference from mine and the one in the pic is that I have a bulkhead strainer on the internal (lower Opening) and a cap with a hole in the external (higher opening) to stop the gurgle sound.

I'm currently using this setup for now on my 72g bowfront and it seems to be working well. Just and FYI the bigger the PVC the more flow. I am using 1" PVC and my pump is keeping up with it and all levels are not fluctuating.

Not sure if is the best setup but I know things will change through the years and right now I am on a budget. It was definately fun to make and amazed myself that it is all working properly... LOL!

Oh yeah the link...

just make sure your return pump equals out with the overflow box..and then some.
otherwise with the double siphon, one side will break..
