HOB Reef Octopus questions

I was looking at upgrading my HOB skimmer. I currently have a Coralife Superskimmer that is starting to show it's age. Cracks in the skimmer cup, having to use vaseline to insure a seal with the o'ring, frequesnt cleanings due to cloddings. If I could afford one I'd get a Deltec MCE 600 but can't really justify the cost. I was also looking at Octopus HOB's but it seems like everyone that has one has had to mod it one way or another. I am not into modding at all and would like to know why they are not good right out of the box.

I am running the 800S on my 50g breeder, sumpless right now. It is modded however I believe you just have to keep the collection cup high during the break in period, to reduce the chances of the collection cup over flowing. Once it is broken in, it is said to run smooth.

Someone else said all they did was remove 10 pins on the pinwheel and it ran smooth even during break in.

The 800S is an absolute BEAST! I have 4 fish in my 50, a 4'' Niger Trigger, 3'' Sailfin Tang, 3'' Cinnamon Clown, 3'' Pygmy Angel. Not to mention it is packed full with SPS. Things removes some funk from the tank. Best HOB skimmer I have owned to date...

What was happening before the mods?

a hob skimmer for a 50g.
I'd look at;
SWC extreme hob
WM H2x

if you dont like mods then dont TOUCH the octo bh-800
