Hoeksemai Placement

I have had a small hoek colony for several months and due to a lack of real estate, I have had to put it at the very top but at the very back of my rockwork, near the rear wall. It doesn't get the best light there and while it seems to have remained healthy, it grows very slowly, as expected.

Well, recently a spot has opened up but it is only about 6" off the bottom of my tank. This would put it over 30" away from my lights (a combination of 250W 10Ks and 400W 20K radiums) but the lighting WOULD now be direct.

Should I try it out there or just find myself a deepwater acro, monti, or an Echinophyllia and call it a day? Thanks in advance.

Mine seems to do best under intense lighting. It gets a really deep purple/blue color and is growing at a decent pace. It might do fine down low, but probably won't get as colored up.

Mine get the best color right under 400w radiums. if i put lower, i lose deep/purple color..
i would recomended to keep as high as possable. radiums whould be the best, imo..

Yes Radiums will make it look very deep colored...don't think this species is a very fast grower anyways....

I think your option #2 would be better...lower but more direct light...

Here's a picture of my Hoeky..Its under 250w Reeflux 12Ks and URI VHO's.. High light, medium flow..

Well its just a guess that its a pink hoeky...Let me snap a pic in a bit....I got it in with a huge shipment of Bali aquacultured corals some time back.....

cant seem to get an ID on this one, hoek or formosa? so far my best looking coral, is a dark purple with blue growth tips and flourecent green coralites

Michael, I would send gcarrol a pm on this question. I know he has had one for a few years and it is a fairly large colony now. If anyone has long-term experience with this species and knows what it does/doesn't like, it would be him.

yup I agree wih Travis. Gregs Hoek's and his was a wild piece that came in from one of the lfs. I was just there and his has got to be one of the best I have ever seen.

I don't think my hoek suffered [nor lost significant color] when kept 12" or so from 10k 175's for a year.

Feel that growth has been better the same distance from 250's ... but I had zero color loss, and little growth-loss [IMO] about halfway down under 175's. [currently about 12-14" down, under 250w Radium]

I wouldn't call this a high-light demand Acropora - whether a low-light one, good question.
