Hole in Sacrophyton - Something in it

Hi,
I´m Felix and pretty new to this forums. I´m from Germany and unfortunately not completely fluent in English, particulary not when it comes to scientific words regarding reef keeping. Sorry for any mistakes I may make.
No one in the german forums had a real idea for solving my problem, so I thought I´ll try an american forum.

I´ve had a Sacrophyton in my tank for 2 1/2 years. The first year it looked just splendid! Always open, polyps out at maximum. It not even closed at nights.
Then it began to remain open just for a 2-days cycle, closed partially (No polyps, just a grey color), then closed completely, lost its "skin" and then opened up again 2 days long and so on an on for the last 1 1/2 years. I had absolutely no idea what could be wrong. All SPS, LPS and other leather coals like Lobophyton were and are in great condition. Water perimeters are excellent.
Only problem are a few cyanos (This red slime, I don´t know if it´s called differently in english) on the rear wall.
A few hours ago I found a hole in the "foot" of the coral. I couldn´t see it before because it´s on the side you can´t see when you look from the front.

I put the coral out and cut it open. There was a space inside the coral and something slimey was in it.

Has anyone got a clue, what that is and if it could be the reason why the coral stopped opening for a longer period?

GREETINGS

no but it definately could be some sort of parasite. I would try to adapt the new pieces of your toadstood back into the tank and watch over it carefully to see if it heals and recovers. Keep us posted.

I cut away about 1/4 of the coral and wasted those pieces. But 3/4 are back in the tank. The lights just went on and it´s showing some polyps. Schould be fine. I hope I got rid of the problem.
Although the tank has many sps and lps corals the toadstool (interessting word, never heard it ;) ) is practically the main coral of the tank because of its size.
