Hole Size For 50gal

Hello,

Im in the process of revamping a 50gal Corner Tank which i want to sump. I have an Eheim 3000 pump but I'm not sure what drill size to do for the Herbie overflow.

I was thinking a 45mm hole. Is there any method to calculating this

Thank You :-)

IMHO, a 1" bulkhead would be more than enough to accommodate the return pump you have suggested. But the size of the hole is going to be determined by the size of the bulkhead you use. In the first link below, in the "quick overview" box it states the size of hole needed for the size of bulkhead to be used.
Thus the 45mm hole you suggested would accommodate a 1" ABS bulkhead.

Here is another link that I think would be helpful in calculating flow rate.

The Eheim will give you maximum 800 gph w/no head loss, so you will be well under the maximum flow for a 1" pipe.

What kind of overflow were you planning on using? If you are going to do a durso or other non-siphon overflow, you need a larger pipe than you do for a siphon

Thank you for your replies

I was looking at a Herbie overflow with 1 1/2" drain with a 1" return.

Would that work? its all very confusing haha
