Holey rock

I have a bunch of Holey Rock from my freshwater tanks and I have heard you can use it in s/w tanks?

Is this true, I know it will raise the PH but will all the good stuff grow on it like live rock?

I have one piece that looks like a shotgun shot it with 00 buck shells and it would look great as a center piece.

Sure, you can put it in there. It won't work as well as real live rock though. It's much denser than live rock, and usually a lot smoother. This is person preference, but I don't really think it looks very natural in a marine tank either.

Thanks for the quick response, I agree about the appearance and if it wont turn like live rock does it will stick out like a sore thumb:lmao:

I have a number of pieces in my 120. I really like all the tunnels and caves it creates for the fish to swim through. It will quickly become encrusted with life, just like any other piece you might use.

Now Im torn, as this Piece I have would look awesome if it could grow coraline algae like the live rock and since its so full of holes it would be a great "hang out"

Decisions Decisions..

It'll encrust just like any other hard surface you put in there. The holy rock I have seen, the shape and texture isn't at all like live rock, so I think it doesn't look right. Also, it's not porous like live rock. It'll become like rock about as much as a bowling ball would.

Even glass will grow coralline if you scuff it before you put it in the tank. I don't think you will have a problem with it over time.
