Gawdly - I believe that the rock does NOT act as a host per se, but certain stages of the Ich can settle in the sand and rock. However, if you keep the tank fishless for 6 weeks this becomes a moot point as the Ich will eventually reach a point where it needs a fish host to survive. No fish = dead crypto.

I just did a google image search on chitons and I didn't see anything that looked even remotely like that thing.

Just had a chance to search Crytoplax and that is it.
Still which side is it head? or does it not have one?

yes it does have a head of sorts its the end that does forwards when it moves lol. sorry could'nt help myself.
Its hard to tell which end is which on chitons much easier from underneath.
heres a pic of different type of chitons underneath so the quality isn't good quality but you can just about see its mouth.
