home depot sand?

i just got back from home depot. they had perfect white sand that someone on this site said they used in their tank. on the front of the bag it said "do not use in aquariums". is this just a liability thing or does the bleaching of the sand hurt the fish. please help as i am getting live rock tomorrow. thank you all

i use HD playsand in my tank, as well as others. the ones that are labeled "do not use in aquariums" usually are aragonite sand. which is what you will buy at the LFS for alot more $$. put some in a cup add some viniger and see if it fizzes. if it does its aragonite.

i have been using it for almost a year. i havent had any problems with it. i dont like the color as much as aragonite sand, but thats not a problem. some will say silica sand will leach silica, not unless they have a 300ft deep tank :D. it takes alot of pressure before the silica will leach. if its aragonite sand, some people will say stuff like there may be impurities in the HD sand. the sand comes from the same barges, goes to the same processing plants, gets shipped to different places to bag it. if you are lucky enough to find aragonite sand at HD jump on it!! im still looking myself. or atleast some real white silica sand.

Thanks for the correction on what ever someone else told me paintbug... that clears things up thanks again

i may have to start drinking to look at that avatar LOL. i have read tons of articles, and threads on sand. they all end up saying sand is sand :D.

thank you paintbug thats what i wanterd to hear. theyhave 3 skids of white play sand at 3.99 for 50# bags. it is as white as the crushed coral in my cichlid tank.

What is the brand name of the sand?

bjones I think I'm going to have nightmares, and I live in a graveyard with dead people. :) Nice avatar

cant remember the brand. just some company from pa. i am goingthere tomorrow to do a vinegar test. its in leominster, central ma 20 mi from nh border.

its not southdown or old castle or else it would be in my tank already. it really didnt have a brand name. just a real generic bag that said "play sand" clear bag, blue lettering and a company name sounded like some onesname. it did not say silica any where on bag. i will post the name tomorrow. and vin test results

there was a thread that I read and I think it said you could use it and save money. My guess is you should use half and half, because live sand has the stuff that is good to help cycle your tank quicker.

i went to hd last night. they have sand, the brand name is kolorscape, on the bottom of the bag it says old casle retail inc. i did a vinegar test and it fissed right up.

I just went to a walmart here in west michigan, they had kolorscape, matching the same bag description, did not pass vinegar test though. ahh well.

I went to get some sand at home depot and they dont have it in stock I guess its a seasonal thing :( they dont know when its coming in.
