Home for clowns in Sps Tank

Hi All,

I read a lot about bad experiences of keeping an anemone in a SPS tank due to the walking and split issues etc

What would be a safer coral that would be perfectly hosted by clowns which will not risk other corals in tank

Thank you.

What kind of clowns? Anemones dont want to run around, and they usually only do if they are unhappy. My brother has a Ritteri and bubble tip in his SPS tank with no issues

+1, I have a BTA and a Haddoni in my system. It is an LPS dominant system, and I have no issues. Both nems stayed within about an inch of where I placed them and have not moved. If they are happy with a spot, they will not move, however if water quality, lighting, flow, etc., are not to their liking they will roam to try and find a better spot.

Adding one to an existing reef can be a challenge, because they are most likely to roam when they are first introduced to the system. Until they find a spot that makes them happy, your corals could be at risk.

Sps can be evet expensive and even if you have a stable placed Bta is it possible to have a split suddenly and that look for place and mess the SPS?

If yes then I will go with Hammer I guess as suggested above even I would love to add BTA rather then hammer

Thank

Yup, always a possibility it can move, in a stable tank, not usually or not far.
You don't have to offer clowns any host. They may take to a hammer, they may irritate it and it dies, or they may just find a corner they like.

Mine have killed a goniopora and possibly some hammers. Not real sure if the hammers were damaged by the male or if it is something else because I am currently having issues with all of my lps. My male is in love with a derassa clam now and has been for a few months. So far the clown seems happy and the clam has been unfazed by it.

+1 clowns don't need anything in particular. They'll pick a territory just like any other fish. The hatcheries everyone is getting clowns from have them in bare tanks with a Clay pot for them to stay in. Most clowns people get have never even seen an anemone. And most people don't have the correct anemone they'd reside in in the wild anyway. It's really not necessary

Rule number one of keeping clownfish, don’t expect them to host what you want them to(at least at first)

I bought a beautiful RBTA for mine and they took almost 3 years to even notice it. They’ve hosted green star polyps, Xeinia, frogspawn, torches, montipora and the coolest one was my clam for a bit.

But like some people have already said they are usually pretty stupid sometimes and host non corals. Mine have also hosted My HOB intake, my magfloat, heater, thermometer, MP-10... you get the point, I even catch my male sleeping on a little egg crate frag rack i have from time to time... just pray that they don’t host your ATO sensor tho.... little jerks trying to flood my room... point is if you want a Nem get a nem they really aren’t as bad as everyone makes them out to be
