homemade magnetic mounts

I wanted to use magnets to mount some powerheads, but i'm stuck on finding a good way to keep the magnets from scratching the glass.

i wanted to use plasti-kote (the stuff you use to redo the rubbery tool handles) but the people i talked to said it may leach eventually.

I would think the whole magnet would need to be coated to keep it from rusting and spewing stuff into the tank.

Any good ideas? Even a medicore idea would be helpful, cause i've got nothing!

I dropped a magnet behind some rocks one time and couldn't get it without moving a lot of my rock work. (That was before I got Mag Floats). It stayed behind there for over a year before I tore the tank down to remove the DSB. It was pretty rusty but I never saw that it hurt anything. Leave the velcro piece attached and I don't think the rust would ever come in contact with the glass. If it did, replace the velcro. I think a lot of people simple epoxy the powerhead mount to a magnet and use it "as is".

i super glued the magnets to the sucktion cups and put tape on the glass were the mag atached to the glass. then again i was 8 years old

neodymium magnets are supposed to be the strongest. The site below gives a good discription of magnet types and their corresponding attributes.

I think a plastic or rubber coated Neo magnet would get the job done.

I've been looking at the new Hydor Koralia Water Circulation Pumps for my new 75 gallon bowfront corner tank (Love it ). It uses a Suction cup and magnet mounting system and looks very nice.

I put one of the Hydor Koralia 3 in a 55g for my girlfriend and it was very very impressive so I bought myself one lastnight for my 90g and it is as equaly impressive in it and I agree it is one of the cleanest looking pumps I have seen for its price....coral reef aquatics has the 3 for 45 bucks and the 2 for 37. John Newby told me when I bought mine that they were hard to get right now cause they are all tied up in customs since they are made in Italy.

oh the water motion is not a straight stream it is swirling motion. the number 3 is 850gph and the 4 is 1200gph not sure on the 2 I m thinking its around 600gph

i got my magnets today--i got some small disk magnets and half again the number of bars (2 disks inside, one bar outside).

they seem to hold VERY well through the glass, and i bought smaller sized magnets. more to follow!

I used marine epoxy to attach the magnets I had on my mj 900 and mj 1200 they have not rusted or given me any problems.... the only problem I had was the magnets I used were not strong enough so instead of messing with it I just bought a totaly different pump lol.....

You can get those cheap glass cleaning magnets at petsmart (not magfloats) and attach with silicone. I've seen that done.

I just bought a few of the $5 mag floats from WalMart, used Super Glue Gel and glued them on the back of my powerheads. Work great, though I wish I had put two on the heavier powersweep. If I ever need to take them off though, it's going to be a pain because they are glued TIGHT! :lol:

What pull force did you buy?
