Horizontal Filter Canister

I am going to hook up an external canister filter that will have filter floss and a bag of carbon. It will be powered using an external eheim pump. The canister is a bit too tall to fit where I want it.

Can I install it horizontally?

I suspect there will be issues with trapped air, but that is a guess, I have never tried it.
