Hot Mag7

My system is 60g total and i have my mag7 pump submerged in my sump. I had it external for a while but felt the pump was getting too hot. It was pretty darn hot if you touched it. I put it in my sump and the temp went up about 2-3 deg. Now my tank is getting getting very hot, about 83-84 at the peak. The heat isnt doing any visible damage to corals ( various shrooms, button polyps, frogspawn, hammer) but i dont like it. I was wondering if keeping the pump external and just letting the mag get hot and letting the heat dissipate would be better or maybe reduceing the lights on time (its about 10 hours). I dont want to burn up my pump with it external, i would rather not lower "lights on" time and stunt growth, and chillers not an option. Fans are not really working eather.....ideas?

Mags run hot. They don't have a fan to cool them like most external pumps, so when they are run externally, they will get hot to the touch.

When run insump, they use the water too cool down, and as a result, you will see quite a bit of heat transferred to your tank. The smaller the water volume, the more you will notice.

If you are going to run an internal pump, the common consensus is use an eheim. If you're not worried about heat, then an Ocean Runner is another option.

If you want an external, I would suggest PanWorld. Thats what I run. The are very affordable, high quality and relatively quite for an external pump.

If you want to stay with the mag, then just let it get hot I guess. Maybe put a small fan near it.

Im not in the position to buy new pump right now, doing repairs on my quad. I guess im just wondering if anyone has toasted a mag running it out of water?

I have a mag 9 (newer = 950) that has been powering the vortex on my skimmer (externally) non-stop for months. Yes it runs hot out of water, no it has not munched.

good to know, maybe i will probably just go back to external until the weather starts cooling off. thanks

Run it externally with a small fan blowing on it in the summer and run it internally durring the winter to save some wattage on your heaters!!!

thats what i was thinking. Its upping the temp about 2 deg so it will save me in the winter, but im in a crunch right now. this is my first mag pump so im just trying not to melt it :). But from what i hear, they just run a little hot external

I love my Oceanrunner and they are very cheap at Drfosters.

When i get a External pump it will no doubt be a Sequence. probably a dart

My mag 7 was running hot like that just before the impeller went out. I was lucky to be home. It sounded like dropping ice cubes into a moving blender and got very hot after that. If I had not been home my whole system would have cooked. Chiller or not.
