Hotel Suggestions for Cozumel

So my lady friend wants to go diving in Cozumel this summer and we are looking for place to stay. Are there any suggestions?

Fiesta Americana Cozumel All-Inclusive Resort has a dive company on site and the all inclusive is reasonable, it includes snorkeling

There are some rather decent places along the all inclusive strip in Playa Del Carmen. Ferry runs between Cozumel and Playa. Dive trips are also run out of Playa that go to Cozumel. I suspect being ON Cozumel is more convenient. Playa Del Carmen seems to have nicer sand beaches. You are somewhat further from the reefs though.

Playa has decent diving but not up to Cozumel's standards. If I were staying in Playa I wouldn't mind taking a day trip to Cozumel for a couple of tanks, but if your goal is to do daily diving I think the daily ferry ride would not be fun.

When I was in Cozumel I stayed at the Barracuda hotel. Nothing fancy and not a very comfortable bed. They advertise themmselves as the only beachfront hotel in downtown Cozumel. That's true but it's not a beach where you can walk into the water from the sand. Instead it's a wall with a ten foot drop. They also have a set of steps you could use to walk in and do some diving right off their property.

With that said Dive Paradise does packages with the Barracuda hotel. Our dive club dove with them and they are truly a first class operation. Their dive boat picks you up right at the dock by the hotel. And some did some night diving off those steps by the hotel with many an octopus sighting.

I like the Coral Princess because it has good shore diving, and it's the only place I've stayed on Coz, BUT it is north of town and the reefs are SOUTH of town. I recommend looking at tripadvisor.com to see info on various hotels. I've heard good things about Fiesta Americana dive resort and Villa Aldora (with their dive op Aldora divers).

The Playa Del Carmen thing, I wouldn't stay there and expect to dive Coz very much. But you might consider staying in Playa for a couple days to do the cenote diving and the Mayan ruins.
Oh, check out Isla Holbox for whale shark season, I think it is later in the summer.
