How about this for STUPID!

Ok, most of you know I am in the process of getting my tank back in shape after ignoring it for the last 7 months or so. Yes I know I'm bad.
So, after cleaning the front glass, I noticed a lot of bubble algae on the grates in both my overflow's. I thought "Easy enough, take them out, put them on the front porch until algae dry's out, clean them then put them back in".....WRONG!
Yesterday I woke up, checked the tank and air was coming out the supply discharges, no problem "I Thought" sump is low, put water in and everything is fine.
SO, I go down to the sump room and sure enough the water was low, I grabbed..not 1 or 2 gallons of water....but 5 (it's a 75 and can handle 5 gallons ...no problem), and into the sump it went. That's when I knew I had a problem, the 5 gallons in, was gone inside of a minute, and then the disaster of it hit me, I suddenly hear a waterfall of water coming through the hole in the floor that leads into the crawl space where my sump is located. Even worse, the waterfall was following the electric lines that power my MH ballast's (x3).
So after the electric circuit trips, I go upstairs to see 5 gallons of water running out the top of the tank onto (the new) carpet. Once the waterfall stopped I took a pitcher and drained at least another gallon of water out, so I could leave the pumps run, even if they did suck some air. I was already late for work and had no options available to me, people don't much care about you're problems when they are asleep on an OR table waiting to have surgery, nor do the surgeons.
The best part of this is that Lisa (my wife, at least she was) had been out of town for 5 day's and was coming home that day at about noon. I called her on her cell on my way in just to tell her what she was walking into.....that was fun, lot's of single syllable words were heard in that conversation (though none were from me).
What caused it? Yep, you guessed it, in taking the grates out of the overflow's, I never thought about the size or shape of a snail. One crawled in, got sucked down the (right) overflow, and made a perfect seal on the discharge pipe. 2 gallons of water into a wet/dry vacuum, pulling the overflow stand pipe, and a quick look with a flashlight, and there he/she or it was, point down in the discharge connection making a perfect seal, I had lost half my return flow.
After writing this post I'm going into the sump room with new electric connections and timers, hoping the ballast's still work.
I just thought you folks should know what caused it, when my next post is looking for somewhere to live.

I love my tank, but I'm not sure my wife still loves me :-)

Quick update, I'm out of the sump room (though not the dog house), and all 3 MH started. Can you hear the sound of relief?
One ballast sounded like it tried to start twice (within 10 seconds), but I'm assuming that is due to all three trying to start at once (on the same line), all bulbs are up and running.
Which is what I have to do, Lisa left me a "Honey Do" list this morning, my options are once again limited :)

Wow sounds like overall you got lucky. You could have had a wore mess. Sounds like thats a "Honey Do List" that will be getting done ;).
Glad its all working out. I got chewed out the night I left the RO machine running into a five gallon jug on the kitchen floor. I fell asleep on the couch. I swear that machine never puts out water that fast when you want it too. Middle of night + Wife with soaked socks in her kitchen = not fun.

Pregnant wife in socks in the kitchen-that means even more trouble;). I fill a 37 galon tub in the spare bathtub because I used to do the same, but water was all over the bathroom floor...

Rick, you need to fumigate for Murphy. I think he is living in your crawl space... Good luck with getting it all going again AND keeping all of your appendages. Crazy, isn't it. You don't mess with it for 7 months and everything is as good as can be. Spend one day trying to return things to normal and get bitten...

Been there done that too, it's always the things that "Never Happen" that get us in trouble!
Honest Lisa, I took everything into consideration (before drilling two whole's in the living room floor that go to the sump room), you're floor will never get wet, water will always go to the sump!
Yea Right!!!!!
A very wise man (an engineer) I was working with at the time, once told me that all his designs were based on the premise that "If it don't work, I'll always think it should have!".
I tried that with Lisa yesterday, she told me to find him, and live with him, or get him to pay for the repairs to the carpet, that she is sure are coming.
Just noticed another "Honey Do" list item I overlooked, See YA :)

Gary (Gflat):
FUMIGATE MY CRAWL SPACE?.....come on, you know my history, let's talk about blowing up the whole house (less the tank), and starting over. No, that won't work as the thank seems to be Murphy's home.
Anyone want to trade tanks?
Oh, and about that Christmas Wrasse; you sure it will move well?... (they are fragile)! I'm sure I can give it a temporary home that will work fine, though it will not be my fault if we can't catch it at moving time :) Just Wondering

Dude, I been there. Installed a new overflow screen cover and for a while the overflow worked, but then it got air in it and stopped. Sump drained, auto top off kicked in and drained about 10 gallons into sump. needless to say it took 2 days for the berber carpet to dry out....

When I built my stand for my 180 gal. I looked at other designs. Everybody had 2x4's around the bottom of thier stands. I wondered, "How do they get five gallons of water out from under thier stand after a flood." So, I raised mine a couple of inches off of the ground. Glad I did! Not long after setting up my tank came the flood. Not a large flood, but a flood! Glad I had a couple of inches to mop up the water. I've been doing this aquarium thing since I was a kid. Floods happen!!! Sorry about your luck Rick.
