How big is the 'base' of a Clam ... ?

I'm trying to figure out how big the 'base' of the clams are. There has been talk of using a small cup or half clamshell to set the clam in so they can be easily moved or inspected in the future without damaging the byssal threads or foot. My question is, how big is the foot/base? How big a shell or plate does one need? I was thinking about cutting a wide diameter piece of PVC (like 4") into quarters and using that.

Any thoughts?

they seem to be about as wide as the shell.

Personally I never liked them attached to shells. Unless you put them on the sand bed and hide the shell, it never looks "natural"
but that is just my opinion. You may be more creative than me!

I never had any issues that required them to be inspected so I just put them in sunny spot and prayed!

Wide being side to side? Or the length of the opening from siphon to pooper? No sand to put them in here so just trying to be safe. I figure the PVC would allow me to epoxy them wherever I wanted.
