How bout a blue mithrax crab

lol no.... I know one thing that the reefers here TN have a better sense and knowledge than what i have seen in the other post

Looks like the thread was noticed by the powers-that-be and shut down. I like how you handled the psycho poster -- I can tell by your thick skin and perfectly polite and concise response that you work in a retail environment. :)

I just read the thread that got closed, and I have to say that one poster was extremely rude! That is one thing that I have noticed about RC. It tends to be very hit or miss as to the freindliness and helpfulness of the memebers vs the out right flaming that goes on. Why is that? I used to hang out here quite alot about year to a year and a half ago and it seemed that more posters were becoming like the one in that thread that was giving everyone a hard time. I have since started to check the forum out again, but I keep getting the feeling that things are really intense here. Example, I made an honest mistake in a thread that I started. I copied and pasted some equpiment descriptions in my thread to list what I had for sale and fat fingered my keyboard and it cut the prices out of the post. Someone then answered me back by saying they would not tolerate my non-compliance with the forum rules and my risking causing this club board to be shut down. I mean, will the mods here pull the form over a simple mistake? That seems rather harsh. Of course, if people tend to conduct themselves more like that other poster then I can see why there would be a zero tolerance. That's rather sad when you think about it.

I have noticed this as well. All that means is you aren't posting every thought that comes into your head, or spending all your time on the board posting.

I have also noticed that there are definite "popular" ways or "theories" about how to keep a reef, and any deviation from that method is criticized. An example, when I was planning my current 180 gallon tank, I posted here to run my plan past some other hobbyists. What I got was "the only thing that will work is the return pump has to be a Sequence Dart, the only options for water movement was a Tunze stream kit, and the tank wouold fail unless I used 400W MH".

Thats why I dont post here a lot. I mianly stick to local boards, and just lurke around. I know what works for me. Im not going to listen to a "English Major" who just so happened to write a book that he, himself published and calls himself a reef expert.

Well, like we all know experience is the best teacher. I used to think that you HAD to have snails, scarlet hermits, blue leg hermits, brittle stars, emerald crabs, etc etc as your "clean up crew". Then I would wonder ... gee ... where are all my snails going? I guess I need to buy more. Gee... where did that fish go? All the rest seem to be doing fine.

Now that I'm a little more savy, my clean up crew is my vacuum siphon that I use to vacuum my SSB during water changes. I keep a sand sifting star, nesserius snails, and a tiger tail cuc. That's it. And you know what. I have zero nuscence algae.

You should have seen the flaming I got over on the USENET boards when I was first starting my tank. The golden rule there is that deep sand beds are easy and beginner stuff. I came here and read Dr. Ron's comments on critter diversity and grain size and selection of tank occupants not to deplete the sand critters. I posted about it in USENET and got flamed and called many different names. The science of anecdotal consensus is pure politics or religion and its high priest-politicians are the rudest people you'll ever meet.

I post on The Reef Tank alot now and really like it. It seems to be more of a family feel. I'm not a fraid to ask anything overthere as I know I will not be flamed for it.
