How can I cool down my mixed water

I have my rodi and garbage can setup in my garage, it gets very hot in there and the water now is about 87 degrees. I have a 125 reef so it's about 40 gallons in the trash can. I was thinking of putting a bag of ice in there but any other ideas are appreciated.

you can freeze water bottles, they work fairly well.

when i worked as a chef we would use Ice Wands to help cool soups and hot sauces very quickly. this one is large, but i bet they make smaller ones:

Thanks I'll look in to getting that wand. However I need to do a water change by today because I'm going out of town. Do you think the ice bag would work?

yeah that would probably work just fine. if you're dropping the ice in to saltwater i would probably make sure i put another bag around it, or divided it up in to several different gallon sized ziplocks to make sure there were no leaks, and to provide more surface area to help speed cooling.

Ok, wish you luck in cooling your tank.
I cool mine with a Fan and m happy with it

You can use also a controler like this to prevent to much low temperature

One plug to connect the fan the other to connect a heater

But when I didn't have the fan, I used iced water bottles to lower the temperature

Always testing not to make sudden low and high temperature changes

When you drink a bottle of water, save the bottle. Fill it with your rodi salt water and freeze. when needed just drop it in the tank. I keep 2-3 bottles frozen

The problem with a cooling fan in this usage is evaporation. A fan will speed evaporation which will change your salinity unless you add fresh water back to make up for it. I use a cooling fan on my 75 gal DT and have an ATO which uses about 4 gallons a week.

Although I use just frozen RO/DI bottles and not salt water.

Yes one of the problems with cooling fans is the increase of evaporation. In my Micro Reef Tank I use a DIY drop system that keeps my water levels

It just needs some weekly tune

Let's say you have a 125gallon display at 80 degrees. If you change out 40 gallons with 87 degree water, it will only increase your temp by about 2 degrees.

Don't over complicate it. Freeze water in a plastic container like a pop bottle or gallon jug. Float it and make sure you have flow. Once your water gets within 2-4 degrees of your DT, you're good to go.

I agree. My garage water is at least 87 and I only put in 10g during a wc so the temp increase is minimal.
