How can I lower these nitrates?!

gmlee, so your Montiporas do okay with those nitrate levels?

The interesting thing about Ross's tank in the video is that he has a full fledged reef system that is growing like crazy with 1.8 PO4 (!) and if I remember correctly over 300-400ppm Nitrate. All his corals were happy and healthy and no algae.

Now, again, this is not to say go out and bring your phosphates or nitrates up high but it goes to show that it's possible to achieve...

Interesting...I got about 5 minutes into that video and had to go run some errands, so I think I'll finish watching it now.

I know this is a redundant statement, but all I ever read/hear is that SPS won't tolerate nitrates. I know that Montiporas are a little more hardy, but they are still SPS Corals (and my favorite, btw). I have been hesitant to add any because I am hard stuck at 30 nitrates.

Thanks...video time!

Well....... no. I am or have been losing some coloration in a few of them but in others they are bright and happy before my transfer. I just recently upgraded my tank and when putting them in a rubber maid container along with my fish I had to keep them overnight along with a drop of temp which was my fault. Right now none are really doing well but two are gaining slight color back. I'm trying a very small dosage of potassium iodine (?) and keeping up on water changes.

Yeah over time u will lose coloration and growth for the most part

Over the 6 months or so I can't complain too much on my 12 corals mostly montipora. It's certainly a challenge though.

Holy crap I missed the 300-400 ppm of nitrate!

It's a very interesting talk indeed. What I'm essentially saying is that one successful way of keeping corals, especially SPS is in a low nutrient environment. But that might not be the only way. From his video, his system according to the current practices, should've been full of algae and dying corals and it's not happening. So something or somethings about his system's setup are allowing the corals to grow and algae to stay at bay despite the high nutrients.

There's a lot to be escalated in our hobby from anecdotal evidence to proven/disproved theories and this is the beauty of it, we're all some sort of a researcher.

Don't quote me on the numbers, I don't remember exactly but they were up there. If either of you watches the video correct me with the actual values :)

EDIT: I knew I was exaggerating, he has 110 Nitrate with 1.8-2.1 phosphate at some point.

EDIT2: Interesting plots https://youtu.be/ZRIKW-9d2xI?t=1308

I have same size tank 2 clowns and firefish. I have 2 aqua clear hang on backs a 110 and 70.I have zero nitrates with no water changes.but I did recently start doing water changes and my corals really appreciated it. I have no idea why. My only conclusion is I run matrix in both hob filters. I don't even clean the sponges that often. Lol.but I did have same nitrates you have for the first few months I've been running about year now total. Maybe try some matrix.

I think flow definitely helps, my tank could use some more. Additionally I'm using crap silica based pool filter sand and conditioned tap water so that never helps.
