How can I safely clean my 55gal barrels??

I just picked up several 55gal, food-safe barrels over the weekend. Found a guy on Craigslist selling them for $12. They had corn syrup in them. I want to use them as my new RO and saltwater holding vessels, but I need to clean them.

Any thoughts on a good way to do it?? I was thinking Simple Green and a power-washer would be the safest and then let them dry in the sun.

I bought from the same guy ,put baking soda in mine and let them sit for a couple of days then wiped them out with vinegar worked ok good luck

Awesome. Thanks!!

Has anyone ever thought of dropping a powerhead in to one of these rain barrels to help increase the distance you can move the water with decent pressure?? I have a good sized pump that I used in my pond and was thinking about using that. Just not sure how it would take the water being shut off while it was still plugged in.
