How can some shops charge 1.5-2x what others do?

yes, there is one out there that is very close by. some can probably guess which store it is.

btw, i love greenwich aquaria, they have some very cool stuff and Jason, the owner is great.

Most LFS's are further down the food chain. Some further than others. This is a result of failure to pay suppliers, poor contacts, inability to keep stock etc etc

Big guys like LA buy direct from collectors, so big savings there!

More hands, more money. Simple.

Oh, and there are the occasional extortionists too.:mad2:

What I have noticed is the nicer looking the store the more expensive the fish. The stores in southwest connecticut all look great but are ridiculously overpriced. If you got into the state more the stores might not look as beautiful but the livestock prices are much more down to earth.

hey, if i could charge more, i would too!

simple explanation is, you must provide something extra to be able to charge a premium. i had trouble figuring out what this particular store was offering in comparison to a store like Greenwich Aquaria (nicest shop i've ever visited, and i think helps this hobby/addiction. who doesn't like a nice clean store with knowledgeable staff), or LiveAquaria. I guess instant gratification, and that you can see the fish with your own two eyes. Sorry, but i'd prefer Diver's Den with a lower price over this any day!).

Southwest CT is ridiculous lol.

$125 for a Flame Angel.

But, as was mentioned before, if someone is going to pay $125 for a Flame Angel they would be stupid to charge less. You just won't catch me paying those prices.

On flip side, I've never seen a shop in CA in either the Bay Area (Peninsula, East Bay and San Jose included) or Sacramento where I could walk in to find all 3 of those fish for sale.

Exactly, ive never seen one of those fish in a store here in Detroit (been in the hobby for a few years, and i keep my eyes peeled for odd ball stuff).

Local pick up will tack on some bucks to anything...

plain and simple greed

Its supply and demand. If they put up flame angels for 100 dollars and sell them, why on earth would they sell them for cheaper? It might be 'greedy' to sell a flame angel for 100 dollars, but selling one for 50 when you could sell it for 100 is 'stupid'.

Well some people would say thats ripping people off regardless if one can get away with it or not. Also selling a 450.00 to 650.00 joc for 2000.00 is highway robbery regardless of how much money is in your bank account.

How so? If some one, OF THEIR OWN WILL, decides to amke the purchase, how is taht anyones fault for anything? If anyone is to blame, I say the buyer, for not researching and shopping.

The median home price in Greenwich:
$1,129,000

Median Income:
$140,803

Point being this is one of the richest areas in the United States. Perhaps they prefer to pay a premium knowing that the fish will arrive at home immediately rather than possibly die via transport. It doesn't matter that there is a full refund/etc. That is not the issue - the prime issue is simply getting the fish alive in the tank immediately.

Again - you could get a 3 bedroom home in most parts of the US for about $250 per sq ft, but try finding that in Manhattan or Greenwich and people will laugh at you.

People have different thresholds with regards to what is priced too high.

Over by me near a place called Metropark - there's an Exxon gas station that doesn't want to deal with the local people because (supposedly) it has an exclusive contract with several limo companies. Price for regular: $3.25. Price for regular at the shell ACROSS the street: $2.62

Perhaps the store you went to just doesn't want to deal with the "common" folk and only deal exclusively with the people in their area? Seems snobby but a logical business strategy if it works.

it's possible. i'm fine with that. also, i find it odd that the median income in Greenwich, CT is only $140K, with a median home price of $1.1M. Perhaps it's per capita, but I think someone with an income of $140K would be unable to make a mortgage payment (....although that didn't stop the rest of America...).

Hell, I'd have a tough time getting by paying my rent in Manhattan on that!
