How do I check if clams are alive?

I have some small clams in my sump that I want to move to the main tank but I'm not sure if they are alive, so how do I check if they are alive? They're pretty small and have white stuff inside. I have a chocolate chip star inthere so it might have eaten them.

If you steam them and their shell opens they where alive

Smell them

I think they are alive because:
They close up
They have white stuff inside
They don't smell bad.

Actually, I think one of thwm is a mussel
