How do I do it

Ok so I want a sum/fuge but I don't have a tank that is equipped with an over flow or return pumps and I don't want to shell out money for one. But never mind those details I already have a design for a sump/refugium, but I don't know how to get the water from the tank to the sump/fuge and then back again

Ideally drill the tank and install a proper overflow.

Second option is a "hang on back" overflow, which will work but is inherently less reliable. Several companies make them.

many of us didn't have a tank with overflows/return pumps.. but we add them.
"reef ready" tanks are a joke/old technology..

drilling and installing something like a bean animal/coast-coast overflow is the "best"..

you also have herbie/durso setups (with cons pointed out in the article above).
But hang on overflows do work too.. they just require more maintenance/baby-sitting to ensure you don't lose the siphon which equals a flood.

But its going to cost you money.. as with everything in this hobby.
A few sayings for you..

reefin' ain't cheap.
and
do it right or regret it later..
or pay now or really pay later :)

I used a DIY HOB style overflow. It ran for 9 months and never lost siphon but it did slow down over time. Needed to be reprimed now and again. Cost me all of 14 bucks and a trip to walmart.

Just add an aqua lifter and it'll never slow down or lose prime.

until the aqua lifter dies or the tube gets clogged. ;)
I had the aqualifter too on my HOB when I had that setup and it worked great..
BUT I sleep MUCH better at night with a proper BeanAnimal overflow now.. I was always worried about the HOB weir when I had it.
