How do I feed my sun coral?

I have a relatively new sun coral that I am having a hard time feeding. I am using a syringe to shoot some mysis shrimp towards its mouth, but it's not opening up and grabbing any of it. In fact, I haven't seen it open up since I got it. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Take a clean bottle cut the bottom off of it and put it over it like a lid, then squirt the food inside the top of the bottle and it will open and take the food while protecting it from fish & shrimp that may want to steal it away as it is a slow eater.

The coral is also non photosynthetic meaning it needs to be fed it does not get any energy from the lighting in the tank.

They also tend to open only at night unless they become "trained" to eat during the day sometimes they'll open up in the day time but I've never actually seen it only heard of it.

Yep, I've tried feeding it that way (with the bottle top), but I haven't seen it open up to take any food. How long can I leave the bottle over it without cutting off its air?

Guess I'll try just leaving it over the coral longer and hope that it extends and gets some food.

well your not cutting off air since its underwater, and I wouldn't worry about it.. you could leave it on for hours w/ no prob im sure. What are you trying to feed it anyway? Tried Rod's food?

I take mine out of the tank after it opens, put it in a small bowl, and feed it brine and cyclops and drizzle it over it with a syringe. I leave it sit for about 20 min and then put it back in my tank

That's a good idea. Might have to try that, although I haven't ever seen mine open. How often do you feed yours? I've been trying to feed mine ever since I got it, but I've never seen it open so don't know if it's actually taking in any of the mysis.

I wouldnt suggest taking the coral out of the tank but, if it works go for it...

This is what I would do (I have dendrophyllia):

Wait until lights go out (they are more prone to open up at night- especially when they have a history of being antisocial)

Turn off the pumps.

Get some raw shrimp, thaw it, and squeeze the juice into the water. If you have a turkey baster, then squirt it right over the polyps.

Never BLOW water right into the polyps face, they dont like that. :D Just slowly release the juice.

This is a good way to coax them to open up...

you can also try this with some cyclops.

Leave the pumps off.

They should being to open over the next 10-15 minutes.

If you get them to open, we can move on to feeding them.

good Luck, this is what worked for me

Thanks. I'll give it a try tonight. Thus far, I don't think it's been eating at all. Like I said, I still haven't seen it open.

I also take mine out of the tank to feed. just keep it in water as you take it out.
i mix up a cube of misys in a different bowl and take some of the juice from the misys and mix it in the coral's bowl and in a min. or two they will be open for feeding. Good luck.

I use to have some sun polyps in my 12 gallon tank and found it a pain to feed them in it so I would try taking them out which would tick them off and they would just go right back inside. I have some in my 75 now and I'm having problems getting them out as well. I'm going to try the bottle method as soon as I can finish a 2 liter.

My sun coral actually opens up more to feed when i put in a bucket to feed it. Ive found this is easiest, my current in my tank is strong and my fish pick at it when i feed it in the tank, by taking it out i know its been fed properly because you have to feed each head. Growth has been very good, several new heads. I do this every other night.

I don't feed everyone one of mine here is a pic of then open with antinics on.
