How do I use ozone?

A friend of mine gave me a Sander S 500 but my problem is that I don't have a clue how to use it.

Can any of You experts tell me how?

Hi Web,

I've never heard of a Sander's Ozonator but it may be common in Europe. In general ozone is introduced into the skimmer or a reaction box. After a fixed contact time it is removed by running it through activated carbon. Direct introduction into the tank can cause serious problems and is never allowed.

Dosage is usually around 0.1 mg/l/hr but varies depending on the organic loading on the tank. Almost always a redox (ORP) controller is used to adjust the dosage with a value of +300-+350 mV being a common shutoff point.

I wish I could be of more help but you would be wise to ask on our Lighting, Filtration and Other Equipment or the Reef Discussions Forums about your specific equipment. I'd also go to the manufactures site for a manual. Misuse can do much more harm than good.

Thanks for Your input guys! I was mostly lokking for info about how O3 is introduced to the tank. Can it be fed through the airtube in the skimmer? Like instead of draughing clean air it gets a mixture of ozone and air...?

Put an airline T on the end of the skimmer's air tube intake. Attach the ozone to one of the open ends of the T and leave the other end open to the world. This will prevent the ozonizer from overly restricting the air input of the skimmer. You may also want to use a small air pump to push air into the ozonizer.

I don't run use an ORP controller. Many people will tell you not to run ozone without one (and its certainly the safer approach), but there are many people that run ozone that don't use one (including myself). I just run a minimal amount of ozone into my skimmer...<25 mg/h on a system of around 130g.
