How do they do it?

I've been reading Borneman's 'Aquarium Corals' and reading this forum and also Reef Frontiers. I'm trying to get a handle on what corals I can keep in, say, a 20 gallon nano. I see these neat tanks with a nice variety of corals and I can't help wondering how folks get these corals to coexist without them fighting each other.

Is one method to get smaller frags and introduce them to the tank together so that they can get used to each other?

I have 5 nanos the largest being a 30 and the smallest an 8 gal. I have mostly corals and very few fish however I have been careful to avoid corals that have long sweeper's. Such as bubble, and frogspawn. I have also seen people put these corals in small tanks and wonder how long it will be before chemical warfare begins. Not sure but I have too many non aggressive corals that I love to chance it. My favorite's are ric's, and blasto.

How many species do you have in a given tank? I am thinking of doing a 20 gallon with just one coral species, like a candy cane or trumpet coral, then a couple interesting shrimp and cleaner crew. Maybe a small goby.

You can put just about anything together if you space them enough.

I have:

3 Candycane variations
2 Acan Lord variations
1 Acan Echinacia
Torch
Hammer
Zoo's
Umbrella Leather
Blasto Welsi
Xenia
Mushrooms (Regular & Frilly)
Tubinaria

All living in a 24 gallon Nano Cube. Limiting yourself to just 1 type would be a shame and you would regret it.

You could do a softie dominated tank, keep zoo's, cloves, xenia, leathers, mushrooms & Ricordias. That would look great and wouldn't lead to any problems.

Good Luck

My 8 gal has only Florida Ric's and Yuma's, no fish but two really cute pompom crabs that come out all the time.
My 12 has zoanthid's, GSP, Kenya tree and red sea xenia. I wanted it to look like a bonsi garden. My 14 has mostly shrooms but hugh ones. My 24 has blasto, xenia, ric's and trumpet. I want it to be all basto at some point. And last my 30 gal has a little of everything already listed as well as a very small brain, small frogspawn and montipora both green and orange. Two of my tanks are fishless. One has 1 mystery wrasse, one has 1 sixline and the 30 gal has two fish.

I have a 29 gallon with a sarcophyton leather, some zoos, two types of shrooms, and all seem to be thriving. The leather and mushrooms especially, so there must be something going right.

Here's a pic of my leather:

I have a 20 gal. long for a sump and run carbon which I change out weekly.

I'm thinking of adding another mushroom and another zooanthid, and probably a nice feather duster.

I've used the 'chuck em' method and have had one expensive acquistion kill off another expensive acquisition. Hoping to avoid that :)

Well, I have a nice verity of corals in my 24g AP and so far so good no issues and everything is thriving
