How do they hold on?

I have a really silly question (well it seems silly to me) about placing mushrooms on a sand bed. How to they hold on? I can see if you place one on a plug but if it spreads how do they get a grip of something other than sand so they don't blow away? I don't have sand in my tanks and am thinking about starting a 40b with sand but how my shrooms would stay put has me baffled (smacking self on head)

Thanks

They will attach to sand as best as they can when they come to rest in a slow flow area. They cannot hold though. Any current at all can lift them up and send them tumbling away. I'm currently replacing my old sand bed and turning my tank into a rubble and crushed coral zone as ricordea will be my specialization. I'm doing it really slowly to allow the biological process's to colonize the new media.

Thanks, at least I don't feel as stupid for not being able to figure this out lol. I guess you could "sprinkle" the sand bed with some LR rubble.
