I use a dremel to cut the plug. It is very dificul to cut any other way. Then attach the coral with Boston Aqua Farms Reef Epoxy. The pink color blends very well with live rock coraline algae.
I recently bought an ORA Purple Stylophora and instead of messing with the plug I just fragged off most of the coral and left a little on the plug. I superglued the cut piece straight to the rock and but the plastic plug on my frag rack...now I have 2 frags. The remainder on the plastic plug is already fully encrusted and now starting to branch up. I wouldn't do this with newly acquired frags but after acclimating well to your tank you usually can frag them with no issues. I will start doing that with all my ORA frags that are encrusted on the plug now.
A nice size gob of Home Depot Water Weld (aka mighty putty) usually will hold the plug in place. Try to find a natural indentation in the rockwork to attach the plug/putty combo.
