The great and powerful Eric Borneman says it takes two hours for photosynthesis to really ramp up in corals. I turned my lights off for awhile every couple hours for a day or two when I upgraded my lights.... maybe you can get away with allot more or just block some of the light.
I think you would have better results if you screened, and used a normal photoperiod. Multiple on and offs during a regular photoperiod might be more stressful. Acclimate to the intensity and keep the photoperiod constant.
... I'm sure it is better, if I see any bad signs of stress I'll use screen, but I really dont have 1. the money for more eggcrate, and 2. Im lazy lol. guess thats bad but we'll see how it goes.
