How do you cut this coral?

I am pretty good when it comes to fragging Zoos, but this is totally new to me. I have this nice big piece of chalice in my tank that I want to cut up and sell at the swap. I have no idea how to cut it up, I think you can go at it with a dremel. The only thing is this particular piece of chalice, its hard to distinguish the eyes from the body. Any suggestions or advice on cutting this piece up? Its on a flat piece of rock that I can take out and move about, so should be easy to work with.

Man, Vu, your tank must look completely different than when I was up there months ago... You've got all the sweet stuff now lol. Sorry I can't help you with your fragging question, but do you have a full tank shot?

A dremel would work best. It's nice to get an eye (large bump) in your cut, but certainly not required. The frag should live and grow regardless. Most chalices I have dealt with and fragged are extremely hardy. It usually takes them around a week or so to heal in my experience.

When I frag them I use a small drop of superglue and mount them on a flat rock or frag disc, and am careful to not allow the superglue to touch any of the fresh cut edges. Stick it in some high(er) flow for a few hours while it slimes up and throws a fit, then move it wherever you like.

If you're fragging that, let me know, I would be interested in a piece as well.

How quick is the growth rate on a chalice like that? I've heard they were slow, so I've stayed away from them for now, since I'm trying to up my collection of frags that should turn into colonies soon.

Mr long distance driver :). You have a PM.

Mark, my tank looks nothing like what it looks like when you were last here. You could say when you were last at my house I was still new at all this. Shows you how being on RC every night make a big difference in only a few months :). Heheheh just kidding. I haven't taken a FTS in a while because it just doesn't come out the way I want it to. But I do have quite a bit more things in my tank from the last time you were here.

Thanks Tj, will cut it up tomorrow and post up for sale once I see that everything is ok. But you have a PM regardless.

Chalices are VERY slow growers...

The faster growing ones seem to be the thinner ones that almost grow like Monti Caps (Tyree Steel Blue, Hollywood Stunner, etc...)

They will benefit from some finely chopped mysis or cyclopeeze spot fed to the eyes, but it won't jump the growth into warp speed or anything. I have a few different kinds, and the only one I get noticeable month to month growth in is my Steel Blue.

And how much is noticeable growth? Let's say your steel blue was a 1/2" frag, would you expect it to double in a couple months?

Chalice grows like that favia piece I sold you months ago Mark if you still have it :). It grows that slow. But if you get a nice colorful piece, it doesn't really matter how fast it grows. Unless you were trying to make a profit of it or something. I got this piece as a whole, and have yet to see any growth on it from month to month. I am sure it got bigger, but not noticeable.

Here is the Steel Blue... honestly I feel like I can watch this thing grow from day to day... it's nuts. I've fragged it quite a bit as well to try and keep it at a manageable size. However, my nicer pieces really haven't shown much noticeable growth, and I've had one of them for around 3 months. Like Vu said... if you get a beautiful piece... size doesn't really matter.

Wow TSwifty, that's some nice growth!

Vu, I still do have that favia as a matter of fact. Ever since I got it from you, it hadn't done much growing. About a month and a half ago, I noticed my Ric Florida had fallen on top of it, probably on it for about a day. When I uncovered the favia, only one eye remained, the rest was skeleton. Since then though, it's grown another eye, and working on it's third I think. It was almost like it kicked into survival mode and decided to grow...
