How do you keep your sandbed clean?

What do you guys like to use to keep your sand bed nice and clean...(as far as critters and fish)....

I've been trying to get my circulation just right, but doesn't seem to be enough...

black cucumber, aka "the turd". I have 2 of them in my 180...one I've had for 4 years now...that one is 10" long. They are awesome at keeping the sand bed moved around, and keep to top layer aerated.

any other suggestions? i heard that cukes can cause big problems if they die and release toxins into the tank...

i have an engineer goby that likes to stir up the sand a little. i like him, but sometimes he burys corals :- /

I think I heard that a couple of them are ok....maybe from Rod. Perhaps he could chime in since he's a huge DSB guy.

Personally I am not big on the sand sifting gobies....I like to keep the sand as full of critters as possible. The fighting conch's are good though, and 2-3 Nassarius at most.

I've heard about the diamond watchman goby, but was worried that it would eat what my Mandarin would be looking for :)
You guys have been a great help!!!! Keep em coming!

time.

Seriously. After about a year you will see no more diatoms, green algae, or cyano on your sand. I have an old 55 still running with just rocks but it's more than a year old and even though the sand isn't anything fancy it's perfectly clean.

My new 125 has lots of diatoms on it, but it's only 2-3 months old. After the tank establishes itself it will be very clean.

Fighting Conch (1 per 50g)
tigertail cuke (1 per 100g)
Cerith snail (1 per 5g)

These all help, but won't completely fix the problem. .

Yeah rod...where you at? ;)

I agree with everything PK1 has said (and I usually always do)

Cucumbers, critters and waterflow (and time). Sand sifting cukes (haluthra species) do not pose a threat that some people still think. Sea apples on the other hand do.

You need to get as many microcritters as you can seeded into your sand. My favorites are terribellied/spaghetti worms, the little tiny white micro brittle stars, and all the unidentified pods .

If you put in a diamond goby, look into going bare bottom in a few years. They are after all the critters listed above as a food source and without the critters, your sand is a timebomb. Also dont put anyting onto/onto your system that will inhibit repopulation of the critters (IMO of course) (sterilizers, filtersocks, Ozone, sand sifting fish/stars.)

I do like a few of the tongan nassarius snails also.

Tony, Do you have a cat5 crimper?

Rod if Tony doesn't have one I do along with the tester so you can check for Pin configuration. Crossover, straight through, etc.
