How do you kill a corral?

A number of members here mentioned they love or hate Blue Clove Polyps. I have a small rock island which is now covered with it. I like it and I thought being on a separate rock, I was safe from it overwhelming my tank.

You guessed it, it is starting to spread with a few polyps here and there. If I can keep removing these starting colonies, I would like to keep the central rock.

Now, the question: How do I safely remove/kill the few polyps starting in unwanted areas?

Thank you. Just to make sure I know what kalk paste is ...

Pickling lime (calcium hydroxide) plus water - right?

I just bought a little can of Kalk powder from the LFS. I mix that with R/O to make the paste then suck it up into the syringe. I'm sure there are cheaper ways!

Turn off all of the pumps, mix it up thick so that it will barely go into a syringe (one in a Salifert test kit will work), slowly apply it over the corals. Let it sit for 30-60 minutes before you turn the pumps back on. Keep the flow low for a few hours.

Mrs. Wages Picking Lime at most grocery stores is a great source of Kalk.

You will never be able to control them ...You have been warned .:wavehand:

It took me another few weeks before admitting your warning was right. Yes, you were absolutely right. I noticed single polyps in numerous place now. The mother island is out of the tank and I am now hunting the runaways. Be this a lesson for others ....

An update for interested parties ...

1. I tried lime (calcium hydroxide), but had a hard time getting it out of the syrange. Once out it was still too watery to stick to places. It did work in killing the polyps.

2. I tried AIPTASIA-X. It came with a better thicker needle. It was easy to apply and it stayed in one place. It worked very well in killing the polyps.

As a side benefit - both methods also killed unwanted hair algae where applied.

So my conclusion: Both methods work, but even though AIPTASIA-X is more expensive, it is much easier.

Now you need to hunt down all of the strays that went behind, into and under rocks. I've been eradicating blue mushrooms for a year and they keep popping up.

You can buy syringes and different size/lengths of needles at farm stores like Tractor Supply and Family Farm and Home. Much cheaper this way!

They will win and slowly take over. If you don't want your tank over run get them ALL out.
