touch each other and cause the "chemical warfare"? is it softies don't touch lps, sps don't touch lps or softies, or is it pretty much just trial and error?

It actually applies to all. except maybe peaceful corals but even they will compete for space. best bet is to do research prior to buying them and prepplan the look and placement of corals.
In fact a carefule as I was, i had a problem with four leathers closing up. I finally moved the last one that I introduced and all the others started opening up again and doing great.

I recommend picking up a copy of "Aquarium Corals" by Eric Borneman. Comprehensive descriptions and husbandry to best know placements and mannerisms.

It's really hit or miss. I second Borneman's book, very good book indeed. There is no general rule except don't have different species touching each other. For example, frogspawn and hammer corals can touch without problems but a frogspawn will likely sting a soft coral next to it. Just depends. ;)
