How do you prepare your SW?

Hey reefers,

This is more of a question for those with bigger tanks.

How do you prepare your New SW for your water changes?

For me to do a 20% water change its about 15g. At the moment I do have 3 5g buckets but it seems like a lot of work mixing up 3 separate bucks and there must be an easier way?

The problem is I can only lift about 5g of SW at a time.

I'm just wondering what are some of the methods your guys use?

You could get a brute trash can on wheels. Mix your 15 gallons of saltwater and use a pump with tube to fill your tank instead of lifting it.

As mentioned above, Brute trashcan with dolly. Use a pump to mix and pump water from the can into the tank.

20G brute trash can, uniseal, short pvc, valve, street elbow..
Mix it all in the larger trash can, open valve, fill the 5G buckets and voila..

If you want to get really crazy, you can set up a mixing stating and just run a hose from your mixing station to your tank.

Not trying to highjack your thread Capsle, but what about standing up a new reef tank? I'm going to be setting up a 93g cube soon.

Would you still make your saltwater in the Brute can(s), or is there a better process?

Also, would you recommend using a standard salt mix to save on the initial setup or go ahead with the reef grade salt mix?

You can add the RO/DI water to the tank and just mix the salt in the tank. I'd recommend using whatever salt you plan on running your tank with.

I use a 55g barrel in my basement fish room. It is plumbed to the DT in the living room and also to the frag tank in the basement. I use a $10 remote control plug (menards) to turn a Mag18 on and off for top offs and water changes. Schlepping buckets gets really old, really fast.

I agree that schlepping buckets gets old really fast. I made all my RO/Di outside and lugged it down to my tank and sump in my basement.

I like the idea of a hard plumbed to the DT. I'll see what I can do.

I bought 50' of 3/4" inch hose to go with an old quiet one 4000. Pump from my brute in garage to tank, best investment in this hobby.

I have a display tank in my living room with a basement sump that is oversized I shut my feed pump off to the display tank and let the water fill my sump. I have a series of valves that allows the return pump to feed water to the sink in my basement and can drain off 20 gallons of water at any given time and open and closed another series of valves to the 55 gallon food grade drum with salt water mix and feed it back to my sump. The easiest water change I've ever done.

My mix barrel and ATO barrel are in my utility room in the basement with the RO/DI. I mix up a batch then it is plumbed over to my sump in my fish room on the opposite side of the wall.

The closest I can come is running a hose through a window to my mixing station living in a storage unit outside.

Then when we are thru fishing or diving, I bring the boat home, wash it, put it in the garage. Then I pump 110 gallons of water out of the sump, and pump the new water into the sump, restart the pumps, and we are good to go. Repeat this process at least once a month. 44 gallon Brute cans.
Drain 40 gallons from display to mark that corresponds to mark on Brute can directly into floor drain in front of the tank, pump water back in from Brute can.
Easy as anything.

I cheated the other night. Drained 40 gallons from the FOWLR 240 into floor drain, pumped 40 gallons from the reef system into the 240, and pumped 40 gallons of new into the reef.

Back when I had my 220g, I used one or two 55gal brute cans. I had a utility room behind the tank so I didn't have to move it. mag7 pump to mix, a powerhead rigged up to suck in air and mix fine bubbles as well. Fill with water, add salt mix and let run overnight. Used the mag pump to refill the tank.

I have a 180 gallon tank and change 30 gallons when I do a water change. I have two brute trash cans stacked. Top one holds RO/DI water. It's plumbed so I can get water for my ATO out or send water down to the bottom one. I have a pump that circulates the water to mix up the saltwater and then I just hook up a hose to send the water to my tank.
